In October 1959, the agency was incorporated as Smith Agency Inc by Claude Smith.

Dennis & Lori Donnelly joined the firm in 1981 hence changing the name to Smith D&L Insurance.

During the early years of the Agency, business was confined to Independence. The business consisted of personal lines and small commercial. Since that time the agency has had tremendous growth in commercial, agricultural, personal lines, customer services, company representation and areas of representation. Smith D&L Insurance now represents over 25 insurance companies and is licensed to do business in the Midwest.
